Collective mark as a sign of authenticity and quality
On Thursday, October 14th, a round table entitled "Collective trademark as a sign of authenticity and quality" was held in the premises of NALED, as part of a project implemented in cooperation with the Swiss Intellectual Property Protection Program.
The participants were Dragana Tar, director of the Swiss program for the protection of intellectual property, Sasa Sreckovic, museum advisor at the Ethnographic Museum, Milos Colic, deputy mayor of Pirot and protagonist of sustainable development Rambo Amadeus.
Moderated by the President of the Ethno Network, Violeta Jovanovic, the panelists discussed the importance of introducing a collective trademark for handicrafts and preservation of cultural heritage, as well as the necessary state assistance through specific support measures for producers and craft associations to register a designation of origin.
The example of the collective brand Original, which introduced many producers of authentic food from Serbia under one brand, was highlighted at the round table. It is also recommended for other producers, local governments and local tourist organizations to gather the best from their communities under one brand and thus provide not only better placement, but also greater evaluation of their work and products.
Within the same project, an authentic jacket from the Pirot kilim was made for Rambo Amadeus, who pointed out on the panel that the handicraft must be adequately charged.
"The jacket I am wearing is made of Pirot kilim, for which many working hours were spent. I feel powerful in him, so that should be his price. It is an example of ethno-urban production and has an exceptional value that must be appreciated today, in the 21st century, especially since we will help the economic empowerment of women who are engaged in these crafts", concluded Rambo.
Obtaining a collective trademark will help producers of traditional handicrafts to establish themselves more successfully on the market, and the public, customers and institutions will be guaranteed that the piece they buy or give away is authentic and high quality.

Hand-woven belt is a universal, traditional Serbian belt worn on men’s and women’s national costume throughout Serbia. Primary role of the belt is functional as it serves to attach the lower parts of the costumes around the waist –in men’s costume, it is attached to the pants, and in women’s for certain types of skirts and aprons. Rugs with geometric patterns and animal motifs, and roses are inspired by famous Stapar kilims. They are designed and skillfully made in the demanding technique of pattern weaving to provide warmth and refine your home or office space. Stapar kilims are next to those from Pirot (southern Serbia), the most distinguished, traditional Serbian kilims. They originate from the community of Stapar in Backa region, in the north-west of Vojvodina province, and the first ones were made in the 18th century. Weaving patterns and motifs changed with time, but Stapar kilims have kept their authenticity and uniqueness to this day and are recognized for prevailing floral motifs, mostly roses and bouqets and wreaths of flowers. In 2014 when Etno Network raised the initiative to preserve Stapar kilims, there was just one weaver left. Stapar kilims have been on the National list of intangible cultural heritage since 2016. Each pattern on a rug is a symbol and tthe unique feature of these kilims is that the both sides are identical, meaning the kilim has two upper sides. In addition to being traditionally made in bright colors, are woven by Ethno Network artisans in a monochrome version in naturally colored wool - black, brown and white.
