Promotion of tradition and handicraft of Serbia

National Alliance for Local Economic Development, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management and Ethno Network organised on November 12, 2009, at the Media Center a roundtable at the topic of „Promotion of traditional handicraft and Serbia“.

The round table pane included the following speakers: Miomir Brkic, editor of the daily newspaper Politika, Zeljko Radosevic, state secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, Sofija Arsic, coordinator of Ethno Network, Renata Pindzo, assistant Minister, Ministry of Economy and Regional Development, Branislav Milic from GTZ, Jovanka Sovljanski from the Association „Gorocvet“ from Indjija and guests from Croatia, Andrea Vugrinovic and Robert Varga from Medjimurje county. In addition to panelists, round table brought together representatives of relevant institutions, donors, cultural institutions, organizations, producers and the media, with the aim to promote the production of handicrafts as a perspective but underdeveloped economic sector that provides employment opportunities for women and youth.

Primary goal of the round table were incentives for producers, job creation and opportunities for development of ethno tourism. During the discussion, the intention was to present best practices in the region and countries that promote handicrafts as a useful instrument in presenting the diversity of peoples and cultures. Secondary goal was to point out the necessity of continued institutional support to handicraft production and preservation of traditional heritage by following models from neighboring countries in the region. The discussion initiated crucial questions about the need for an active role and coordination among institutions, tourism organizations, museums and local governments in the promotion of handicrafts that make an essential part of rural development and agrotourism.
