Weavers from Backa visiting Pirot

Representatives of local associations from the north - \'Staparke\' from Stapar, \'Zlatne ruke Somborke\' from Sombor, and \'Lenka\' from Odzaci, visited the Pirot-based association in the south called \'Grlica\' and a rug making cooperative \'Lady’s heart\' to familiarize themselves with the work of the cooperative, its origins and details about the Pirot rugs. The hosts presented the cooperative since its foundation, cooperation with the local government, marketing, as well as other challenges and experiences in the preservation of rug making. As a token of friendship and cooperation director of the cooperative, Slavica Ciric, was given a local specialty called “listara” in a hand-woven bag with a motif from a Stapar rug. Listara is a traditional dish of dough and raisins that is made and given on festive occasions.

The visit was organized within the MoU between Pirot municipality and the City of Sombor under the auspices of the Embassy of Australia in the revitalization of rug making, and in order to facilitate exchange of experiences in the development and conservation of motifs from Pirot and Stapar rugs.

Upon completion of the workshop, members of cooperatives led the guests on a tour of the local sights and a stroll through Pirot, including a visit to the local museum. The tour was completed by going to the gallery to attend the opening ceremony of the exhibition of Stapar and Pirot rugs and the art of Australian Aborigines.
