Tradition with a mission

In the residence of the Ambassador of Australia, H.E. Mrs. Julia Feeney held a reception for exhibition of Ethno Network items to promote Serbian handicrafts and contribute to the economic empowerment of female artisans.

The refined atmosphere of the ambassadorial residence that includes works of art from around the world, was augmened with an exhibition of handicrafts by Ethno Network, featuring selected pieces of clothing and items for interior decoration. A guest of the exhibition was a crafts cooperative „Turtle Dove“ with distinctive rugs from southern Serbia. After a number of years, this event offered the visitors with a memorable sight by presenting Pirot rugs (southern Serbia, geometric motifs) along with those from Stapar (northern Serbia, floral motifs) as the most striking element of this exhibition.

The reception was attended by many representatives of the diplomatic corps and the business community, and the support for this initiative came also from Princess Katherine who in his brief speech highlighted the importance of preservation of intangible cultural heritage and support for women - handicraft producers. Although only briefly in Serbia, Ambassador Feeney has made it possible for Ethno Network artisans to present their work as guests at the exhibition of Aboriginal art that was held a month ago. The artisans who attended the exhibition at the residence received well-deserved attention and recognition for their work and contribution to preserving the vanishing traditions of Serbia. The Ambassador has reconfirmed her sincere interest in our handicrafts by taking the initiative to facilitate partnership between the municipalities of Pirot and Sombor and thus establish ground for their coordinated action and support to preserve local rug-making as an authentic trait of Serbia’s tradition.
